Toilet Time Trivia- Why do the Men’s Toilets Smell?

Portable Toilet Smell 1,Toilet Time Trivia: Why Do The Men’s Toilets Smell?

Toilet Time Trivia:

If you have ever cleaned a bathroom in the past, then you will know that the accuracy rate of male urination isn’t very good. It’s the law of the universe, very much like E=MC2. If you have a smelly bathroom at home or if you work tending to public toilets, then you may think that the only option would be for you to tear everything out and restart.

This is not the case at all, in fact, there are far more sustainable ways out there for you to reduce the smell without releasing harmful greenhouse gases into the environment.

The Four Target Areas in the Bathroom and Toilet Hire Study

An 18-month study was done by the Toledo University and they found that there are four distinct areas which are responsible for the odours you’ll find in a male bathroom facility. The findings all came from field studies, and they included interviews with restroom users, janitors and custodial workers. Air testing was also done to get to the root of the problem. The findings can be found below.

Area One- Missing the Target

Uric acid comes from men who urinate on the walls, floors, their shoes or any other surface. This causes a huge amount of bacterial build-up and this produces the odour. If this is cleaned on a regular basis by a toilet hire cleaning service, then build-up won’t occur and the toilets will be easier to clean.

Area Two- Splashes

Even when the target has been met, uric acid can still splatter on any of the surrounding surfaces. Most often, this includes adjacent partitions.

Area Three- Grout

Urine in grout areas can be found in both women’s and men’s restrooms. Urine absorbs into the grout and then the acid builds up, again, releasing odour.

Area Four- Improper Maintenance

Uric acid is known as being the main contributor when it comes to odour, but it would seem that sometimes, the tools or products used are just not as effective as they should be.

The Conclusion of the Study

The study came to the conclusion like so many studies in the past have done, and it found that a restroom is often perceived as being dirty because of the smell, regardless of how it looks. In order to combat restroom odours, cleaning professionals need to have a comprehensive odour-busting system which eliminates the four different components listed below.

Finding out what is causing the odour

Determine where the odour is coming from

Determine what cleaning products are most suited to eradicating the odour

Deploy an odour control solution, such as a fragrance that disrupts smell perception

Now the study explains that odours need to be masked rather than removed. This needs to be done with a compound that is non-toxic and low in VOC. If you want to take things one step further, then you should know that most urine smells can be neutralised.

When you go through a portable toilet hire service, you will soon see that they have their own cleaners which are enzymatic. It’s also entirely possible for you to create your own solution as well. If you want to do this, then you’ll need to mix:

  •       5oz of Hydrogen Peroxide
  •       1tsp of Baking Soda
  •       1tsp of Vinegar
  •       ½tsp of Orange Washing Up Liquid

When you have mixed the above, simply shake the bottle, which will combine the ingredients together. You then need to spray the area until it is very damp, before allowing it to dry. The formula should look like a powder when it has dried, to which you then vacuum it up as you normally would.

This solution can be applied to your construction toilets if you want, but most toilet hire services will offer to clean the mess up for you, so you don’t need to concern yourself with things like this. If you want to get the best result, make sure that your portable toilet hire provider cleans the toilets around your schedule.
